Venice

piazza-di-san-marco.jpg.694x694_default
Piazza di San MarcoThis huge square is the principal square of Venice that had it's beginnings in the 800's and has gradually been morphed according to the different historical and architectural periods through which it has been steadfast. Dominated at it's eastern end by the magnificent Cathedral and Basilica of St Mark adorned with it's Romanesque carvings, Byzantine mosaics, Gothic architecture, Greek influences as well as features taken from Arabic Constantinople (now Istanbul), this church is one of the jewels of the Catholic church and of course Venice itself.Adjacent to this awe-inspiring monument to faith and the organic growth of the city lies the Doges Palace again constructed in a Venetian Gothic architectural style which served as the home the Doges and thus reflects their temporal power and splendour. In contrast, the Bridge of Sighs connected to the palace and the prisons of the time provides a stark reminder of differing levels of freedom and the links that men share.
